Yeah, I would say that the gig was “OK”, the audience enjoyed it in the end, but there were a few hairy moments. I’m kind of fascinated to see what motivates people to spend £13 on a ticket for a comedy gig if they aren’t interested though. I also wonder if there are any other art forms that rely so heavily on the mood of the audience.

I’d quite like to give it a try going to see a new act night. I think they have them at the Comedy Store in Manchester, so I might have to take a trip over to give it a look.

It sounds like you went to an “ok” gig. There are worst where the acts did like 90 seconds of material for a 30 min set and teh audience just decided to make up their own material. I think the act probably ended up calling individually everyone in the room a cunt twice.

Its hard at this end of the spectrum of standup where no one knows who you are so you have to spend at least a good 5 mins to convince the audience like “Hey I am funny, listen to me” where big acts will just sneeze and people laughed. (BTW off a tangent checkout video of David Lettermen’s confession and you can see what I mean.)

Hopefully I will do the store oneday, but it might be a while. Thanks for supporting comedy and please checkout some new act nights. They might no where near pro standard but sometimes you will be pleasantly surprise by the amount of talent this country has to offer!

I attended a ‘Comedy Store on tour’ gig last night and it really wasn’t a comedy audience on the whole. The first act really struggled but the second comedian, whose act was a lot broader, managed to get the audience under some kind if control. It’s really interesting to see the effect that the audience has on the show. Last month the demographic in the room was completely different, and so was the atmosphere. There is no such thing as the Laughing Horse Free Fringe.

The Free Fringe Ltd runs the Free Fringe and owns the name. We carefully guard the quality of our shows, and do not want any shows that are not part of our programme to be confused with those selected shows that are. Whatever the Laughing Horse’s shows are, they are not the Free Fringe. Only the shows in the Free Fringe programme are part of the Free Fringe. I believe the Laughing Horse’s shows are designated “free festival”. The show you refer to above was not part of the Free Fringe.

My impression of Carnival this year was that it was the best I’ve been to in over 25 years of the things (my worst was 1986, where I was abandoned outside Westbourne Grove Post Office with my decks and all my records for 5 hours – that deserves an article in its own right!).

I’ve posted some photos of Carnival from my own perspective at Gaz’s Rockin’s Blues on Talbot Road. We bascially got stuck there the whole time because of the crowds.
